View Full Version : long range scopes
Time for another dumb question.
We are setting up a long range bench rest at our lease out to about 800 yards. Targets will be at 100, 250, 350, 500, and 800. ( We don't have room for 1000 yards)
A lease member has a Sendero with a mil spec scope and can dial in each range. It is a .308 Win and he is deadly with it.
That gun will hit a 8 - 10 " circle at 800 yards when everything is right.
What is available in the market to do this type of shooting?
I've got a Nikon 4.5 -14 on my 308, but that dail-up is really nice. Any suggestions?
I feel a scope trade coming on but I don't want to give up anything that my Nikon provides in a hunting situation.
Thanks in advance
Tom
If you use a scope that has target knobs, you can figure out how many clicks are required for each range, and do the same thing you're friend is doing.
Most companies have models with target knobs in the higher power ranges-like 6-20's.
Tom -
Looked through a Tasco 40x target scope with the mil-dot reticle last Thursday at the range - impressive!
Most target scopes have the hand adjustable turret knobs in 1/8" increments. They also have the instructions that denote the mil-dot setup for various cartridges, bullet weights and ranges represented.
Most long range target shooters stick with one bullet and load combination and then practice and observe bullet impact with noted scope changes. You can do the same with any GOOD repeatable click adjustment scope with the small incremental changes (1/8"). Don't even need the mil-dot setup to do it. We're talking quality scopes here - top end Leupold, Burris, etc.

Sounds like I' not missing much.
The Nikon 4.5 - 14x has the curl knobs that can be manually adjusted. Is is 1/4" click but I think I'll set it dead on at 100 then figure what the distances and clicks adjustments are at each distances. Then tape it to the side of the gun and go that way.
Simple enough-
One more thing, what bullet do you recommend for the 308 exclusively for target work?
Thx Guys
I wonder if Nikon would put target type adjustment knobs on that 4.5-14 for you.....
My Nikon 6.5-20 has them, and they make the adjusting very easy. They're bulkier, and easier to bump, I suppose, but for a rifle used at the range, maybe not a factor....
Bullets? Sierra Match Kings.
The new Hornady 168 gr A-Max Match would be a real good candidate, also. Awfully long bullet - probably have to load single-shot fashion.
