Since all the lever guys get to get their guns out and play for Ranch Dog's Postal Match, and since i am sure that there are others here like me that don't own a lever gun. is there a chance that there could be another postal match either unrestricted or sporting bolt actions(no guns that were specifically built for target competition i.e benchrest) for those of us who would like to be involved with a shoot like this but don;t currently have the resources to buy a new gun? I would be willing to host it, but i have no clue on how to pull off something like that. I hope it doesn;t sound like i am whining, I am just wondering if there would be someone willing to do it?

I simply don't have the time to administer a postal shoot, but would be glad to provide a sub-forum and support on this end for such an event. Sounds like fun! Could be fun to do the same with a 50 yard handgun event over the summer as well. I'll give what's needed here, for such an undertaking, but have to have someone else who's willing to be point-man and carry the ball! Above all else.... keep it simple and have fun!

Ranch Dog held her 1st postal match last year on MarlinTalk. My dog seemed to think it a good summertime activity, beats snapping at flys.
Anyway... It don't take a lot to get it going... some basic rules, and honest people willing to go out at shoot. It's a lot to setup and I had a terrible response considering the numbers of members on MarlinTalk. Those that participated had a great time and learned a lot by just shooting their rifles. Let me finish up this stuff for the leveraction so that you can see what might be needed. I'm planning on being done this week and having things posted by the weekend.
It will be the same for me as it is you. Can't shoot in a bolt-action match... after seeing how accurate the Marlin's were I got rid of them and bought more leveractions!

I don’t have the financial means to provide prizes for any category so unless someone wishes to sponsor a category by providing a prize, this match will be for bragging rights

Can someone please explain what a postal match is. You go out and shoot at your targets and post the results???

Sure Cochran...
A postal match is simply a shooting contest held via long distance. You shoot at the particular target specified for the match and then mail the target in to be scored. They usually are pretty informal affairs but sometimes they are serious with the targets needing to be certified by a local range officer, etc.
They can be a great source of incentive to practice with your firearm if you don't have any local competion to incite you to do the same.
I introduced the match on MarlinTalk last year because I was curious just how many shooters vs. sitters there were out there. I ended up having a heck of a time, not necessarily competing with others but aginst myself. Even though I never met the individual contestants in person... I consider each a close friend because of the communication that has taken place since that match. I've learned a lot from each of these fellows this past year. This year I got to meet gmark340 and in a couple of days I'm going to meet VTDW, both over feral hog hunts. I suspect there will be a lot of conversation about the match and that we will have a heck of a time. All that started over RD's PMI!
The down side of the match is that it can drive you crazy once you start shooting. I also has cost me a lot of $$$! I saw just how accurate cast bullets where as they literally "cleaned house" and it started me in search of lead, molds, pots and are the rest of the equipment!

RanchDog is so right!!! The Postal Match 11 will drive you crazy because a 5 shot group with a lever gun will try your patience for sure. We had to shoot at 3X5 index cardw with a diagonal drqwn from corner to corner from both corners. Well that ain't exactly what we are used to shooting at for targets. I remember that RanchDog posted that one of my posts made him laugh because I was so frustrated! I shot no telling how many bullets in the match from my 30-30 and 444 and had a great time getting to know my rifles and shooting technique. Now we have to shoot at the center ot the target!!! Oh well, another exercise that will no doubt make us better with our rifles. RanchDog is sure a sneaky fella.
Enjoy and be patient,
Dave :)

As for your targets, keep it simple, and make it easy for all to access the targets you select. Here are a few for your consideration, if you haven't already looked at them:

A quick download of the selected target, and anyone who wants to shoot is up and running!

I would also get permission to use the ones from Targetz.com if one of them turned out to be the popular one

JB,
Set up a poll, and take votes... make a deadline for decisions, then run with the results! Too, if you want a sub-category for this match, when you get things lined out, let me know, and I'll set you up!
Looking good! Heck we could have a really fun summer here on the forums with a few friendly matches going on here.

**** yeh It will be winter down under but me and a few of me mates will be interested in that if you dont mind upsidedown enteries.
we can cover most cal's between .22 and .308 I could always drag the old 44-40 out of the cobwebs and find a few rounds here some place..
what about 100 and two hundred yards open for modified handguns
eg.. rifles with a barrel length of no less than 16 inches and pistol grip. open sights 4inch targets.
I dont partake in this my self but I have a m8 who has just built a custom 300 whisper for professional comps. I recon he would be keen.

jb,
Why don't you just pick a dozen targets or so and allow the contestants to make the final selection to enter. You'll probaby never satisfy all - Even with a poll. Seems many targets would work - All they would need to have is just one aim/center point per sheet or page.
PS: Suggest you split the scoped rimfire rifles into a least two catagories: 1) Contour barrels 2) Bull barrels
