As some of you know I've been working with plain base cast bullets and filler to act as GC to reduce leading. Since the 454 in a rifle pushes bullets(Cast) at some extreme velocities and leading will be a problem. Two loads I've been working with are 255 gr SWC and 250 gr LRN over 30gr of W296 with 3 gr filler(Cornmeal). Well I finally got out to shoot these some yesterday and results were mixed. The 255 SWC shot fine with good accuracy and seemed consistant . The RCBS 250 gr LRN did not perform to my expectations I think I'll need to increase the load a grain to 31 as they printed about 6" left of center of the target. It could have been me or tyhe wind -blowing about 10-15 mph from the left? But I'm wondering if it's the bullet as it has not shot well in any of my guns except the Ruger BH which I don't own anymore.
I like the 255 gr load as it should prove to be a great deer load out to 150 yds and is running about 1850+fps. Recoil is mild compared to my 300gr load at 1995 fps -but powerful enough to do some serious hunting with. More to come :D
