I am looking to get a XD-9 or XD-40 (leaning more to a 40). I have never owned a .40 S&W so that's a new caliber for me. Any suggestions on the XD line, 9mm vs .40, or pros and cons on buying Springfield...

This will be used mainly for defense at home and shooting at the range. Would anyone carry a XD-40? (Model XD9109
or Model XD9502) or a XD-9 (XD9501).

What about the cost issue for ammo 9mm vs .40?

That should be enough for a first post :-)

Thanks everyone!

I have a Smith&Wesson .40SW...great caliber in my opinion...more stopping power than a 9mm and less bullet(and all affects that come with it) than a 45. I think their a great compromise. I personally load my own ammo for nearly all my stuff, but walmart has decent prices on Winchester White box ammo. Its like 14.95 for 100 rounds of the 165 grain round flat nose...pretty cheap in my book. Youll be hard pressed to find a better deal on 100 rounds of factory loaded stuff...at least at a local store. Good stuff for target or plinking. Ive only recently started to load my own rounds for the .40 and have really enjoyed some good success in my limited experience of it...saves a bit of money over higher priced ammo too.

My opinion!
The nine is a none starter, not even a consideration. I've got a buddy who uses the nine for IDPA competition but carries a 45 for social intercourse.
I have no experience with 40s other then the blinkity ding dong things get picked up with my 45s and jam my Dillon.
The forty-five has done an excellent job of winning shooting matchs for 50-60 years. And even more excellent job of winning loud social discussions for nearly hundred years.
If you can shoot a forty you can shoot a forty-five.

Either or. The nice thing about the .40 is that you can get a 9mm or .357 sig barrel from bar-sto and shoot both without needing to buy extra mags.
Your .40 mags will work as high caps for the 9mm barrel and as 10 rounders for .357sig.
might also try this forum for more XD info.

My neighbor has an XD40. I have shot it and can say that it is an excelent handgun for the money. Very accurate and reliable. I would own one too but already have too many 45s. Personally I would not consider the nine. The cost of shooting a 40 is not that much more, and in my opinion, the 40 is a better defensive round.

I have and carry a XD-40 Service model, (Xd9302). Its very comfortable to carry with a FIST #8 http://www.gunnersalley.com/category/holsters.leatherholsters.beltholsters/
Accurate, and a great value. The trigger is excellant for a DA only and in my case the grip ergonomics leaves the competition in the dust. I'd recomend the bi-tone models as there have been issues with the blued finishs. The Winchester white box ammo is a good deal and accurate.I clocked 10 rds of the 165 gr stuff recently and got an SD of 6fps,not bad.

If this is to be a defense pistol, I would certainly go with the .40...if you are more interested in something to just shoot around with, go with the 9mm (cheaper ammo, and a bit easier to shoot accurately, a little less recoil). I have a Beretta 9000 in .40 and I have never been unhappy with the purchase...although a Kimber or Para .45 is starting to look tempting!! :)

PS-ammo price...$14.95 for 20 rounds of Speer GoldDot .40 S&W...ouch!!!! This wouldn't be an issue if you handload though...

I carry an XD for a duty gun. Just part of the uniform. I would recommend the series in either caliber. Personally I liked the ergonomics and the features over the Glock. If you decide on the XD-9 you can get a deal on pre-ban 17 round magazines through Springfield Armory. That offer is only for the 9mm model. I carry a 4 magazines on my duty belt and have a total of 55 rounds on tap (two 10 round and two 17 round mags) though I hardly believe I'll realy need that many.

Hello. If you think it might be of use, here's some information on the XD9:

Best.

Buy a Springfield XD in either caliber. I owned several handguns in several different calibers. The XD 9 is one of the best shooting and functioning guns that I’ve shoot. It is extremely accurate, reliable and fun to shoot. It will shoot anything. You can’t go wrong. The price is right and backed by a life time warranty with one of the best companies in the market. I am getting ready to purchase the compact 40 for a conceal carry. I also own a Springfield compact .45 that I carry. I have never read anything negative about these guns. I own one and love it. I also purchased two of the 17 round clips from Springfield and they work great.
