We have made plans of immigrating to the us and I was just wondering if it was illegal to totally strip my colt gold cup commander and bring it over to the US with us in my checked in luggage? I have owned this firearm 4 years and i bought it brand new and because of its value I dont want to just leave it here. Anyone connected with the ATF? Just kidding...........

Do a google searh and find U.S. Customs, as that's the first government agency you'll have to deal with.

Then the second will be the ATF. The ATF's regs are all online.

Wouldn't be sneaking a pistol frame into the country in your luggage in this day and age, personally.....

Get here, establish your permenant home and get your local CCP. Then have your .45 sent to you by secure shipment with a copy of the ownership papers in the box ( hang on to orriginals) and insure the shipment for safe measure. I don't think I would have the stones to even try to explain to customs, ATF, FBI,FAA..... why I have even a fully disassembled firearm with me on a flight.

Thanks for the reply.... and recommendation. How about sending it by mail, would you do that? UPS place it in a lead sheet protected tin can? You think it would work?

Very illegal, unless done by licensed dealers with the correct paperwork. Don't mess around with this unless you want your stay in this country to be a short one, my opinion, do it right and legal.

We Canadians figure the ATF doesn't want anything related to firearms crossing the border, either way. I'm aware of several incidents where Canadians got in serious trouble when they didn't follow the rules to the letter. It's much easier for an American to bring a gun to Canada than for a Canadian to take a gun to the U.S.A. If you can't get all the right paperwork, don't even think about it.

Also, you should check the state and local laws where you plan to live. Some cities, like DC and Chicago have a handgun ban. Some require hard to get license to own.
The pistol frame is a pistol, as far as ATF is concerned.

You might be better off to sell it where you are, and buy a new one when you get your residency established.

Thank you very much!!! I am glad you guys informed me.. much better than staying in jail or getting sent home. Thanks to all of you. I will not bring it for sure not, I will just mothball the gun and keep it all oiled up and stored in zip locked bags. How about sending by "surface mail" my reloading press and some dies that i have. Everything would be all clean and would have not gun powder or primer in it. Just asking......
