I just moved to the area and found this:

http://www.krtraining.com/FAQs/AustinGunFAQ.HTML

I have no knowledge of the host of this site, but it is a good resource. Some of the links are dated, but it is a great place to start.

What is your definition of "good"? The Austin Skeet Range (also has rifle/pistol ranges) charges $6 per gun so if I take 3 guns to shoot, it is $18. Red's Indoor range is $12/hour, minimum 1 hour. Eagle Peak does not allow FMJ rifle ammo, HP or SP only. The Hill Country Range is far for me, but that is where the USPSA matches are. The ranges are geographically diverse, so it might make sense to just pick the closest one.

Good resource - thanks, found a few I didn't know existed.

Outdoor ranges are going to be away from the city.

The two indoor ranges are pretty decent, Red's has been around a while, recently bought out the other and now it's "Red's North" or something like that. Used to have a membership when it was "Cook's", but dropped that a while back due to various circumstances. Neither is in the city of Austin, by the way, but phone numbers should be in the Austin area phone book.

Hill Country range (southwest of town) is a nice facility, but the old man who runs it is compleltely crazy. Haven't been out there in a while.

There's two other ranges not listed that are a reasonable distance away if you're on the northwest side of town, one on 183 toward Briggs and the other on 29 just past Bertram.

Capitol City Trap and Skeet is a very nice facility, but it's clay targets / shotguns only.

Anyway there are some places to shoot. Thanks for sharing that link, Lee!!!

Um, yeah. Richard is certainly ... uh ... eccentric. I am told that once he gets to know you, he is easier to deal with. Apparently that property has been in his family a long time, so he wants to protect it. He does not like people shooting shotguns there, since the wads and shotcups can be eaten by cattle, which is hard on their digestive systems. Cattle? Grazing in a shooting bay? Hmm, like I said, eccentric. He lets the USPSA club shoot 3-gun matches with shotguns, but those are just a few times a year.

By the way, Red's Indoor Range (south) has 100-yard lanes, not bad for indoors.

There are a few good ones towards San Antonio, Deitz's in New Braunfels, Cedar Ridge just outside of Garden Ridge, and Braken Range in Braken. Although not all that close to the Capitol area, the drive to and from is quite nice using the back roads instead of I-35, and you might make it a day trip sometime. E-mail me if you want more info.

Without a doubt, the best place to shoot is the Austin Rifle Club. Reason: it's PRIVATE. No yayhoos waving around their first gun, which also happens to be an SKS, AK47, etc. This is a serious range where you can easily be the only guy there if you time it right.

Come to a meeting and apply for membership. I'm sure we'd like to have you.

Don't remember the name of the place. Haven't shot down there in a long time but did pass by there in April. Go past New Braunfels going west on Highway 46 its outside town a few miles on the south side of the road. Stopped by one time from San Antonio back to Kentucky, for they allowed shooting my .50 Browning rifle at the time and had like 500 yd ranges.

That would be the Dietz gun shop and range.
