I took my new vintage 336RC to the range and shot it for the first time last night. I had an interesting scope related occurrence happen which I would like to relate to you and ask for opinions.

The scope is a vintage Weaver K-4, vintage Weaver quick detachable mounts and I used a new Weaver one piece scope base. The scope/rings work fine on other rifles of mine.

The rifle shot about 10” low and 10” to the right at 25yds! No way can I adjust that at the turrets.

My plan is to:
1) Remove the base from the rifle and measure its dimensions for irregularity. Same for the rings.
2) Reinstall the base, push forward on the base to center it in the screw hole radii, then tighten. I didn’t do that when I originally installed it.
3) Bore sight the rifle/scope combo.
4) If the problem is still exists, install shims in the rear bottom scope ring to bring the POI up towards the POS.

I just had this happen on my 10/22 and a new scope I bought for it so I am familiar with the process. I am surprised that I am dealing with this same issue again though.

I look forward to any comments I may get on this thread.

Thanks….

One of the simplest tools has been a big help in getting mounts/rings lined up: a 3 foot lenght of 1" O.D. tube. Not exactly the easiest thing to come by, but if you select a dead straight 3 foot length of 1" wooden dowel it can help. Not used to pry or move the rings in anyway, just mounted up and looked at.

Long enough that it overhangs the muzzle and the breech, you can SEE the miss match in angle (giving the elevation problems) and windage.

I had a similar problem with my Marlin 1895, in .45/70. I put a Leupold Vari-X 3 scope on it, with a weaver base and rings. It shot low, and I ran out of height adjustment on the scope. I then took off the Weaver base, and went with a Leupold Standard base and rings. Still had the same problem. I then sent the scope back to Leupold, and it checked out O.K. Now I took the rifle to the gunsmith I do business with, and he put a piece of shimstock under the rear of the base, where it screwed to the receiver. Now things are O.K., the gun shoots fine, and I have adjustment to spare on the elevation.-Landngroove.
