Spring will soon be in the air and there is no better way to be outdoors than spending that time at the shooting range. So grab your rifle, ammo, and ear plugs because it's time to shoot Ranch Dog's Postal Match II!
Beartooth Bullets is our most gracious host this year and progress during the match can be monitored right in the comfort of your own home on these pages.
This year, the match is open to any leveraction centerfire rifle. If you haven't shot a postal match, it's really quite easy. Open the Rules (http://cuero.nodial.net/~lindareamy/PMII/rules.pdf) and print a copy. They are pretty easy to understand because there really isn't many of them. If you have any questions, ask right here on this forum.
You will also need to open the Target (http://www.shootersforum.com/pmii_target.pdf) and print it. It will take a bit to upload the file depending on your connection. You should consider saving the target to your computer so that you can print as many as you need or want to submit. Just click on the the save "disk" on your tool bar. Both the Rules and Target files require Adobe Reader® (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html), it's free and if you need a copy click on the underlined text.
Once the target has been shot, make sure all the information is complete on the face of the target. ON THE BACK OF THE TARGET, add your name, email and snail mail address. The face of the target might be displayed on this web site and RD doesn't want your personal info posted.
As our sponsor Beartooth Bullets will award prizes for top shots. RD's Hondo Creek Ranch will also award a random prize for each category. The winner will be drawn from targets submitted. So... shoot often and submit your targets no matter if the individual target is better than the last. More about the prizes in a subsequent topic once the shooting starts.
If you shot in RD's Post Match I, there are a few changes. The target is a target rather than a post card. Hopefully this will aid the sight picture. As the emphasis on my shoot is on practice for the upcoming hunting season, the 5-shot groups will be measured from the center of the target.
Your participation is appreciated!

My concern: BLRs and m99's are essentially bolt action rifles, but lever operated. Originally RDPM was going to be a Marlin only match, ie, tube mag hanging off the barrel, loose locking bolts and heavy triggers, ie, a contest to see who despite such shotcomings could still shoot reasonable groups... but then MT got unplugged. My concern is with the Marlins and Wins going against the Savages and Brownings, what would have been a contest of VW bugs vs Ford Pintos, is going to become a bugs vs nitro burning whatevers contest. How about adding the requirement that the firearms must have both a tube mag and a lever?

R.D.how would you classify a red dot?No magnification.Scope or site?
Oh man... my first command decision of the new match. Well, I looked around a bit and it seems the industry pretty much considers them a sight rather than a riflescope. Most of the dots from the different sporting optics manufacturers have no magnification and sport 3 to 6 MOA dots. No way that should compete with the scope... Yeap, despite waking from a sound nap my dog lifted her head in agreement. Shoot the match at 50-yards!

Greg...
Given the circumstances you've outlineded above, it would be difficult to limit this to the individual rifles with tube magazines. I would also be concerned about limiting the potential number of participants in this event as the PMI didn't generate much interest from the hordes of folks on MarlinTalk. From the quality of the participation we had last year, I have no qualms about the Marlin type leveractions competing with these rifles. In fact, my four tube fed levers will shoot inside my wife's M99.
Sometimes, it's hard to figure out just the what the right thing to do would be but I just don't see the problem of these rifles shooting against each other. Time will tell... I do know that folks will have a tough time out shooting you.

Good question Cary...
YOU CAN ENTER AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WISH! Your best group in each category will be used to place you in the match but there will be a several random drawings for prizes from all the targets submitted. So, if you you shoot and send in a target but subsequent shooting sessions don't yield any better group... send the targets in anyway as it just increases your chances in the random drawings.

There is no cast bullet segregation as you guys kicked butt last year and darn your hide... you, Greg and the others have launched me into that activity just from what I saw in RD's PMI!
I shoot from a bench also and elbows or any other body parts :p are legal. I just didn't want the guns locked in a sight-in type rest or braced with bags.

Maybe not with a .38-55, for example, but a .375 is in another class recoil-wise, than the .30-30. No worries. though. I'll take my lumps. :D
If recoil weren't a factor, we wouldn't have classes, to begin with. Or, is there something else on which our three classes are based?

Actually the classes where set up with bullet diameter in mind. The groups are compensated by bullet diameter but the basic groups keep the playing field level.
Last year the match was based on precision shooting; just the overall size of the group and that group wasn't referenced to a bullseye. As far as which calibers shoot the smallest groups overall... Big Bores... no doubt about it and that has been my overall experience. Here is what the smallest groups in each caliber looked like...
20's... .605"
30's... .577"
40's... .527"
Based on these numbers, you are better off shooting your .375 Win. in the .30's rather than against the .40's
Interesting numbers, RD. I shall proceed as directed.
Maybe we could have a special ".219 Zipper vs. .45-70 Govt." category just to wring the numbers out. :D

Well,
Ya'll have really set the hook.
This is going to be one of those type of challenges that could turn into a recipie for instanity, 100 yards, 4X scope, FIVE shot groups......I can almost see myself going nutty after putting four in real close, and the fifth, "over there".
Not to mention that I have to choose one of my crank actions. Which one? I know how these guns shoot, and I do believe that this will have to be done purposefully, selecting one, and sticking with it. I have no idea which one would be most competitive, as all have needed the occasional group therapy.
Time is wasting....... to the bench!

Whitehunter35,
The nice part about it the playing field is pretty level. It doesnt come down to who has the most amount amount of money to spend on the highest power scope, space gun design ect. It comes down to working with a rifle and loads and shooting it.
It does become very frustrating. Like you said you get a good group with 4 rounds.....and then pull the 5th and start all over again. But it is a lot of fun. And I think the most important thing is that it gets you ready for hunting season.

I am keen to give this a go RD only got 2 questions.
is a indoor range ok. 100 yards for 30-30 with scope set to 4x power?
and what is the final post date for aussies as it will take about a week for snail mail to get to your address.
possibly a email copy sent in be ok. I can understand the "no its easy to mess with a scanned image" reason no problems.

An indoor range is fine and just be sure you finish up no later than deadline. After the deadline it will be a week or so before the final results are posted and it's easy to let me know one is on the way. Just send it like any normal letter with no special handling... keep it cheap!

I finally got the Acrobat reader downloaded and got a copy of the PMII target.
Questions:
1) The Offical Target that I downloaded is in black and white. Is this correct?
2) Can the target's center be changed to a different color (in example: Blaze Orange) by the shooter, and still be legal?
3) Are the factory ammo shooters competing in the same classes as the handloaders?
Coments:
Well, I am not as confident as I first was because;
A) I can't use the locking vise. I can rarely be as good of a shot as my guns can.
B) A 5 shot group compared to my normal levergun 3 shot group. Something always seems to go wrong on those last two shots.
C) Along with my scoped 336 .35rem, I am looking fowarded to entering my Winchester 94AE Trapper .44 and my Marlin 30AW in the open sight class. The latter two leverguns don't see as much action as I feel that they deserve.
R.D., thanks for the challenge. I missed the first PM, I will surely not miss this one. I can't speak for everyone, but I feel that I will be competing more against myself than the other fine shooter's you have gathered together.

Questions from Leverpuller
1) The Offical Target that I downloaded is in black and white. Is this correct?
Yeap
2) Can the target's center be changed to a different color (in example: Blaze Orange) by the shooter, and still be legal?
Nope
3) Are the factory ammo shooters competing in the same classes as the handloaders?
Nope
Well, I am not as confident as I first was because;
A) I can't use the locking vise. I can rarely be as good of a shot as my guns can.
That's pretty much the case for everybody... we are all even in that respect.
B) A 5 shot group compared to my normal levergun 3 shot group. Something always seems to go wrong on those last two shots.
Yeap
C) Along with my scoped 336 .35rem, I am looking fowarded to entering my Winchester 94AE Trapper .44 and my Marlin 30AW in the open sight class. The latter two leverguns don't see as much action as I feel that they deserve.
That's the good thing about this years match... all the other levers get to play!

Leverpull you have truely hit the cartridge on the primer with that statement. This is really spending one of the better times of the year, outdoors, enjoying your firearm to the fullest. I can assure you that your shooting will improve no matter how good it is now. I taught myself a number of things last year and it put me in a very confident position this past winter with the couple of shots that matter. I will look forward to receiveing your targets!

VTDW,
Hows the wind down your way??? It has been blowin about 20-40 mph here for the past couple days. Still pretty much mud up to your.... , cant get out to shoot targets here. You know it is muddy when a guy cant even get out in the field to get snow goose decoys set up!!
15-20 mph today. Yesterday was just beautiful but I lowered the mower, changed the oil and filter and did the mow thing. what a waste of a great day. Should have done that today and gone to the range yesterday. I sure want to go to the range one day this next week because the great hog hunt is the week after.

Mowed the lawn? :( Mow the lawn...go shooting. Never a choice for me ;) As I'm loading my stuff in the truck.....well honey, I'll be back from the range later. If there is enough light I'll try to get the lawn mowed  If not I'll bail it next week! :)
I'm getting the itch to get started on the match, but it will be impossible to get to where I shoot until things dry up. My buddy has a nice bass pond out in the middle of a section. We have a range there next to the pond. We have a bench, 100 yard target board, 50 yard target board, steel gong at 100 yards and small swingers we can set up any where for pistols or small bore. The path back into there is nothing but mud. I'd need a tank retreiver to get my truck out if I tried it. but once it dries out I'll be out slinging lead.
I will be wanting to see pictures of the hog hunt! Have fun!

Regarding the use of red dot sights. If they are to be shot as open sights, and one justification for this(there may be more, I don't know) is the fact that most have no magnification, may I shoot the 50 yards with my 1-4X scope set at 1X? There is no magnification there either. The only benefit for ageing eyes is having all your sight planes on the same focal point, but thats exactly what the red dot sights do too. How about it. Save me the trouble of having to remove the 1-4x 20mm from my 1894 SS .44 magnum.
Last year that wasn't that big a deal as group size was what mattered, but this year they also have to be centered on the bull's eye, so this business of removing and re-installing the scope to shoot both the 50 and 100 yard targets is more of a pain.
No big deal. El que no llora, no mama. (loosely translated: The squeaky wheel gets the grease.)
Planning on going to the range soon. Too much work right now!

Luis... great quote! I think the real consideration of were the "dots" sit in the open sights vs. scope debate is the size of the dot. Typically, most sporting use dots are 3 to 6 MOA. At 100 yards they cover 3" to 6" on the target. Your crosshairs, even at 1X, are probably still sub MOA at 100 and half that at 50 yards.
Why don't you shoot your rifle at 100-yards?

I'm going to be shooting both, 50 and 100 yards, with the same rifle. Hence the need to remove and install the scope as many times as I go to the range.
Your point on the 3 to 6 moa dot is very valid and I concur with the decision.
Good shooting!

Well Guys,
Went to the good range yesterday after work and managed to spend a little (too little) time on the match.
Firstly, I reckon I used the last bit of printer ink in the U.S. Army, because I only managed to make 6 targets, and the copier went down.
The 358 did fairly well, I stopped using my portable bench after the first string of 5 showed linear tendencies, and didn't pattern enough for me to see a trend- my bench is getting a little loose. Went prone, and the second string was better, although grouped around two inches high(one flyer, of course) . For my third and final string, I held on the bottom of the dark ring, and the first three were touching in the X, the next just a ace outside of the middle bull, and the fifth, over 2 inches low to the 6'0clock. DANG!
I had a great day, and still laugh about it when I see that last target. You know, that kind of nervous laugh that if you do too often the guys in white coats come and get you.
The other rifle, (300 SAV) shot freakishly high, the first string only putting three on the target. I manged to adjust point of aim enough to get two average targets, although I have never been happy with how this rifle groups. I'll send them all in anyway, heck, its only a stamp.
All of these groups had that one round that wanted to be an individualist. What the heck? Barrel fouling? Heat? Fatigue? Sloppy reloading? Why in the world will four go where you want, and the fifth just go where ever? Could somebody please tell me why? (Have to go, the guys in the white coats are here.)
Seriously, I'm having the time of my life, this is almost as fun as hunting. 4X is no trouble, at all. I"m going to keep after it, and JB's match as well. Thanks so much for setting this up, R.D.

Hi,
I'm new to the group, so I'm not sure this is where to post this request. I live in N E Texas and bought my first Marlin 1894p in Austin this last weekend. I hope to reload for it, and have most of the equipment that I need to do that. I'm looking for some recommendations of loads, bullets, casting mold, etc. I've already downloaded the rules, target, etc. Reading through some of the posts here, it looks like I need to find a combination that will get close to .5 inches at 50 yards to be in the running. I have no idea what the 1894p is capable of doing in that reguard, as well as what I am able to do.
Sixty year old eyes don't quite cut it, and I've put a lyman peep sight on the rifle to help.
Any comments, suggestions are welcome.
Thanks and glad to meet you all.

Flintrock,
Welcome aboard! Is the 1894P the 44 mag? I cant keep up with all of Marlins letters. The best way to get a good load is to pick a bullet and powder and just start working up a load. I have a load for my 35 Rem that I worked up for my 336CS that pretty much shot clover leaves. Out of my 336D it doesnt shoot worth a ...... about the best I have been able to do so far is 6-8 inches at 100 yards. So it is back to the loading bench. No way could I lucky enough to have a load that shot good out of both rifles.
I have really never messed with cast bullets so I would not be of much help to you there. You might look at what Marshall has to offer here on the website. I have been looking them over and have been thinking of trying some cast bullets. It would be just another excuse to "have" go to the range!
It is a fun match to shoot so get ya some bullets and start slinging lead. :D

Yes it is a .44 and I appreciate the idea of building up to a good load/group. Which jacketed bullets are you using? I have some old Hornadys that I think are 248 gr that will get me started. Also for silhouettes, do you think hollow points or round nose to be better? All my reloading books are ancient! lol, and I'm thinking of ordering one of those. Again, any suggestions? Sorry for all the questions, but I am trying to keep it down.

As for the bullet I usually shoot the Hornady 250 gr XTP with 17.0 grains of AA#9 thats for a 45LC. I dont have a 44 mag rifle...yet. I think the hollow points will work fine. That is all I shoot out of my 1894 45LC and they have never failed to do the job. I have several reloading books and like the Hornady, Accurate Arms, and Hodgdon manuals the best. Flintrock,
I'm not sure of the #. It is a .500 hieght. i usually get my fire sight direct from Williams because I have them put the green fiber optic in it insted of the red. In the color spectrum you can see green longer than you can red. I think the Williams is a little finer than the truglow and doesnt cover up as much of the target. If you go to a Fire Sight you might as well go to an aprature rear sight also.

Don't fret none 'bout them 99s and BLRs, they're a-comin'. I had to lose my 444s yesterday. :( My buddy wanted it back. I got back my Sav 99 take-down 303 though. :) The BLR's just waitin' fer ammo.

Got another target in the mail. I had to use jacketed bullets and am not through readjusting the ghost ring but I was out shooting so I shot a target. Experimantal load too. It looks like a good one though. Without further adjustment of the sights I was happy with the group. I will load more ammo and get it adjusted and send another target in May after this turkey thing is over.

20 Cal Match... 2 participants and 4 targets entered.
30 Cal Match... 9 participants and 28 targets entered.

An overwhelming number of the targets have been shot with Marlin rifles! Where are the BLRs, M99s, and Winchesters?

Ranch Dog,
Although I've shot a few RDPM targets, none have been acceptable to me, but look out . . . I'm knocking on retirements door and soon will be available to use the range every day! And, my open sighted 30-30 is a Winchester 94 so you'll be getting at least one Winchester target.
Enjoy your holiday.

Ranch Dog, finally got to the range last Thursday. Shot the 1894 .44 mag with the scope on at 100 yards. Then removed the scope and fired it at 50 yards. The results were pretty dismal! But I'm sending you the targets anyhow.
I'm really out of shape. Should be able to go back in a couple of weeks, so I'll try again.
Also been shooting a new 1987T I got, but that needs better sights.

Well I went out to see which load I would use for the match for the 454 Rossi. And if I can shoot any where near as good as I did today you guy's are in trouble!! :D If I could get the target loaded I'd show you a very nice 1 1/4" by1 3/8" group of four-yes four! # 1 shot was to see where it would hit and the rest were shot after the site was lowered. But I have no doupt that all five would have been in the same area. The load will be 240 gr XTP Mag over 35 gr W296 , Win Case, CCI SR Mag OAL 1.730" 2315 FPS, Open site 50yrds!
O.K I finally figured it out-Heres the Target!!! :D  The other holes are from 250 gr XTP's with 10.5 gr Unique load wasn't impressed with accuracy with that load!

Because we are close to having the 10 participants to have a match... I've split the 30 caliber shooters into Open Sights; Factory and Reloaded Ammo.
Hopefully the additional contestants will start sending in their targets so we can get on with this! I will start shooting my rifles next week. When you see "9 replies" on the topic, I will start placing the entries.

Ranch Dog,
First a thought on a name change for this postal match....you could probably pick up a corporate sponsor if you called it the Ranch Dog/Hewitt-Packard Postal Match. I've printed so many targets that HP stock is probably climbing! And, sadly I've thrown most targets away because of embarrasing fliers or great groups printed way off center.
Anyway, today I shot again and am sending my only 30-30 target to date, this one with Speer bullets, fired at 100 meters. I'm also including some open sight, cast bullet targets fired with an 1894-44 mag, and another 1894(CB) in 45 Colt. Incidentally, the weather up here in PA today is just beautiful. 72º, calm, sunny, low humidity and the bugs don't yet know it's their time to bother us.
If I sent all the targets I've fired at you would suspect that I was determined to win the final drawing by stuffing the box! Although it would be nice to win, it wouldn't be fair if I had 50% of the total entries.
I still intend to enter with my 38-55, Win M94, and possibly more from these two 1894's, all with cast bullets & open sights.
I will probably get to the post office by Monday so the targets will be on their way soon.
Best regards

Hi Guys,
Thought I might get out Sunday afternoon to shoot up some more targets, but got 4" of wet snow Saturday night. Crazy country, was 70 F on Saturday! Land of extremes! Anyhow, it's cold and miserable tonite too, so back to the loading bench. Think I'm gonna try 54 , 55, and 57 grains H335 behind my non-heat treated hunting bullet. (420 grain wheelweight) The hardened bullets shoot somewhat better, but this is my favorite bullet for our local whitetails and mulies.

Last evening my 21 yr. old granddaughter stopped by for a visit. She's going on vacation later this week, visiting her boyfriends father in Cuero. She spelled out the name of the town and said no one ever heard of it, but I showed her one of your Postal Match targets with your address and she was quite surprised.
Too bad I can't go along and maybe we could have teamed up on one of your hogs out there in the brush.
More targets coming soon but none as good as last years, at least not so far.

Steelbanger...
What the heck is a matter with that girl... Tell her to stop and not leave without you. The hogs are on the move. All five of my feeders are being hammered! I went to check today on my dove and quail plots and they have been torn to pieces in the last couple of days. The rivers are high because of the recent rains and that always gets them moving. I piled a bunch of limbs and stumps under the feeders today. I'm looking for some really big hogs and this way I can tell what's moving. My feeders do have mud on the legs up 3 feet or better... if it's their backs... that's a good hog... if's it's just snouts... it's still a good hog but not what I'm looking for.
Thanks for the targets... remember we are shooting groups measured from the center of the target this year... that's always tougher but more like shooting those hogs and deer!
What's a kid from Cuero doing up in that part of the country? Did he take a wrong turn somewhere?

I haven't even shot a target..... shame on me, been busy.
I'd support that!

I'll add some prizes:
Custom-built expander button for Lyman "M" dies. By custom, I mean built EXACTLY for the diameter of bullet you are shooting. Also will incorporate a short 'pilot' section to help ensure that case necks are concentric. See the tech notes for pictures, explanation, etc.
These are made of oil-hardened drill rod, and you won't be wearing one out anytime soon :D I think I have 5/8" drill rod on hand so anything up to that is fine, should cover through .600 Nitro Express I think
Naturally I'll have to make these after the winners are announced.....
Michael, let me know how many you want to give away as prizes. Half a dozen or so is fine.

I hurridly fired a few rounds downrange through a PMII target or three, but nothing like I'd enjoy doing. With an extension maybe I could get the kids to shoot a few targets as well.
Thanks.

Dr. A,
That is one heck of a group you turned in on 40 cal scoped! Congratulations. I would LOVE to get any of my 45-70s shooting groups like that with light cast bullet loads like yours. I have only tried one light cast load - 12 gr Unique under a 340 grainer from my Lee mould, and it was disappointing. What kind of lube do you use? Is your bullet gaschecked or plainbase? I appreciate any advice from an obvious pro.
Live well
Hey everyone.. Is there anything I have to do to signup for the match or can I just send in the target. I have a 1895M .450m that I have been having a hard time shooting, I even sent it back in the factory to get it fixed I really havn't shot it much at all and I am still not convinced it is shooting right still, but I'll break it out and see how it goes.

ICS, if you have any non lever guns you would like to shoot in a match, there is another match for non-levers in the rifles and rifle cartridges section. Good luck in RD's match

ICS...
No sign up... just shoot. The PMII Rules and Target (http://www.shootersforum.com/showthread.htm?t=9840) are here.
If you are having problems with the 450, detail them here at Big Bore Lever-Guns (http://www.shootersforum.com/forumdisplay.htm?f=54) as I'm sure somebody will have some info that helps. I hog hunted with a fellow that shot a 450 Marlin this past Spring. The rifle was very accurate.

Hey Big Redhead,
I am not a pro, only a guy with so many failures I had to get lucky sometime. I already sent you a PM already, but noticed this here. The known ingredients are 10gr. Titegroup, Starline brass, any large primer, Lyman 457643, liquid alox tumbled twice. Brass necks are annealed. Also, the cast bullets are water quenched. I am not sure that any of this really matters, as Greg Musial had good luck with this load as well. The thing that really improved my accuracy was Marshall Stanton's barrel lapping and his booklet on understanding it. My bullets are not sized, and come out .460 or .461. Temp. was perfect for me at about 70 degrees. It is too hot for me to do any better now!

Well I finally got out again and got some shooting done. I like the Limb Saver Recoil pad on the 1895G. Got one good group with it to send in. Also got out the 444 and shot it. I'm now thinking it NEEDS a Limb Saver pad also.
I may have a finally found a bullet powder combo for the 35 Rem 336D...we will see how it goes. Cant wait to try Marshalls 180 grainers out of it.
There has to be more than just 2, 25-20 rifles out there?
Get out and some targets shot!!

Ranch Dog,
Sent you some more targets off my 1894 SS .44 Rem. magnum. Notice that some of those are 50 yards, without the scope, using the factory iron sights. Same rifle, though, I just remove the scope for the 50 yards, then I just put it back on. **** hot down here now.

Michael, I was working up a load with my Ruger #1 yesterday for hunting season. It is properly called a falling block. To me this is not a lever gun, although a much more experienced rifleman insisted that it was. I am done getting targets for my 30-30's and 45-70. Does the number one belong on this match or the other gun match? The number one is a 45-70. I worked up a load that really hoots and hollers. My shoulder still hurts from 20 rounds yesterday!

THE OTHER GUN MATCH?!?!?!?!?!? So now us non-lever shooters are shooting the "other gun match" hmmmphff. Just kidding, we will be glad to have you and your #1 if RD rules it illegal.

Thanks for trying but I think the #1 belongs in the "other gun match" :D

I participate in both matches and happen to have a fairly tight group in the "other match", fired with my Ruger No 1 in 45-70 with 400 gr. Speers! I got lucky one day and had (for me) a really fine 5 shot group. I'm sure JB12string would welcome your participation too.
Your much more experienced rifleman needs still more experience. The No. 1, as you stated, is a falling block action.
Best regards.
