Has anyone done the Wild West Guns .457 Magnum conversion? I'm not really interested in the $1500 in extra crap the put on the 1895 to convert it to their "Alaskan Co-Pilot", I'm more interested in the cartridge in a regular ol' 1895GS.
I liked that they included loading info for the .457WWG, because at $59.00 for 20rds, who could afford to practice with it? They also suggested using a heavy-jacketed 350gr JSP at 2200fps, but I'm thinking more along the lines of a hardcast 405GC at 2000+ fps.
Here in Texas, the 45-70 is plenty for anything we have, even nilgai. ....but XXXXXX, has practicality ever stopped any of us from adding to the toy box?
Finally, I know that over on the MT boards a few folks commented on the 50 Alaskan. I never paid much attention, since I didn't have a big bore then. The 50 Alaskan looks even more serious than the .457mag, but I think I would enjoy my 1895 more if I could shoot 45-70 and .457WWG magnum.

There was some discussion about this chambering a couple of years ago, here at Beartooth. Do a search in the general Leverguns Forum. I think Jackfish had some good posts included, so you might be able to do a search under his handle for it.

A M1895 Marlin can have the lifter/carrier stops lengthened to handle a 2.65 COL loaded 45-70 and lengthen the throat a corresponding amount. Handload the 45-70 to the 40,000 psi range at the 2.65col and you don't need to buy the 457WW ammo.
Any of the levergun specialists can do this for under $200 and it is still a 45-70 for cartridge purposes. Just crimp the reload with the great Lee Factory Crimp die and have at it.
Belive me when I say your shoulder won't take more the 10 of these loads on the bench.

The Marlin 1895 45-70 can be modified to cycle a cartridge that is an equal length as the 457 WWG Magnum. Hence, a rechambering to that round is unnecessary. I doubt the throat on the Marlin 1895 needs to be touched, it appears plenty deep for up to 2.7 COAL.

There's know real advantage of the .457 over the Modern 45-70! 2200 fps out of a 22 inch barrel for the .457 WWM and the same is achievable with a 22 inch 45-70.Buffalo Bores 350 grain Chrono's out of my 18.5 inch barrel at 2114 fps.Go figure. In my opinion,it's not worth the price.Nothing of value is achieved.
Just my opinion.Jayco.
