Have any of you tryed gas check cast bullets in your 41 mag? What is your bullet speed for a 250 grain bullet? In your opinion, what is the best bullet weight?
Thanks, Taylor

The only cast I've shot so far is the Federal 250 gr. cascore bullet they sell for hunting, the speed is 1250 fps. (they say). But it shoots like a house a-fire in my 1894FG.
If you read this Marshall, is your 255 gr. or your 265 gr. short enought to cycle thru a Mod 94 Marlin? If so I would like to order some, thanks

Been using 220gr. as the standard load; never shot anything larger than small deer with it and didn't feel a lack of penetration. Do ahve an old HBWC mold, and by making various hollow base pins, have thrend out bullets that can be as heavy as 275gr....after playing with them for atime, figured that there wasn't much to be gained from going over 255-260gr. in a handgun...prhaps a rifle would better put the heavy weights to use.
Was a time when i couldn't beg, borrow, or steal a .41gas check...no one had them...so I lapped the gas check bases off the Lyman #410610. Shoots well, but that design seats deeper into the case, taking up volume, so max. loads have to be a good bit less than the longer nosed (and plain base) #410459.

Relo,
With just a little tinkering to your rifle, they work absolutely flawlessly! As the rifle sits.... probably not, they won't cycle through the action, but that isn't terminal, and easy to remedy. Check out this link:

Once thusly fixed, your Marlin will shoot any of our .41 caliber bullets very, very, nicely! And what a sledgehammer they make in a rifle!

The article said to "carefully mill back the front face of the cartridge lifter 0.100 of an inch". The "front face" would be the end of the cartridge lifter? In other words, shorten the cartridge lifter by 0.100 of an inch?

I think it's the stop on top of the carrier that you cut back so a longer cartridge can lay on it. This needs another look. See this picture.

OK. It makes sense now. The bullet slides down the lifter until it hits the stop. The stop is filed back 0.100 of an inch to allow longer bullets to be loaded. Will this work for other Marlin rifles, such as a 444 Marlin rifle?

Taylor - Yes it should work on any Marlin. The key word in all of this is to go SLOW. What will happen if you take off to much is that the carrier won't be able to lift the case high enought as the rim will fall below the face of the bolt. You only want to take just enought to get the bullet you want to work and still cycle the gun. Have fun and good luck. I'm going to do my 94 FG as soon as I get the 265 gr.'s that I just ordered as I want to make a dummy round to help so I don't mess up. Will let you know how it comes out if you want. Ron

I also posted this in the Handloading area. Just made 2 dummy rounds for my 94 FG ( BTB's 265 gr.gc with a COL of 1.705 ) so I could see if I had to take the gun apart to tinker with the carrier. Wala, the rounds cycle like hot butter. If I go to anything longer I might have to do what Marshall suggested but as it stands for now I'm not touching a thing. Thanks for the help Marshall. Ron;)
