What is the best way to properly store guns in a basement were dampness may be an issue over the summertime? I cannot afford a safe at the moment. I considered building a wooden cabinet with a dehumidifier in it, but wasn't sure if that would be sufficient. Other idea I had was storing my guns in cloth cases or plastic bags along with a silica-bag in it.

I think you are on the right track with a dehumidifier. Moisture is the enemy.... if you can't get a safe, how about an old fridge with the dehumidifier in it? That and a box of the dessicant that you can put in the oven once a month and dry out.

Keep a real close eye on them too.....

sounds like you need to build a gun and reloading room in the basement, if you have central air, you can run a regester and return in and you shouldn't have a problem with the humidity. this may all be overkill but hey, what a great excuse to build a gun room.

steveIf you are talking pistols for long storage, clean and oil them and use one of those vacuum machines that are made to store meat in the freezer. With mine I can make a bag any size I need and seal both ends. No worry about moisture with this system. JoeyT

they make the bag stuff on rolls that you can cut to length, you may be able to cut it long enough and seal a long gun up. only problem is if you plan on shooting much over the summer
