Am in the process of working up a good hunting load (white tail) for the 44 maggie. I order the BTB 250 g LBTLFNGC bullet but they do not want to chamber withour jiggling things around. Guess they are too long nosed. Jacketed 240 bullets that I have reloaded work very well and load without any problems. My question is would the WFN design work better than the LFN in this rifle? Would like to find a design that works well without doing the following. I have read the threads talking about filing down the cartridge stop to improve feeding in the 1894 44. When looking at the parts break-down on the 1894 I do not see a part listed as the "cartridge stop." I take it that this is the back of the lifter/carrier that the base of the bullet rest against as it is being lifted up to the chamber. I'm assuming that the suggestion is to file the back, I have seen it referred to as the "face", back a little so that the cartridge sets further back as it is being lifted. If you have experience with this process and can add clarity it would be appreciated.
Thanks, Zack

I have 1984 44 Mag. It will have trouble feeding cartridges longer that 1.610. That being said I have poured some RCBS 250 KSWC bullets and loaded them in magnum cases. These feed well in my rifle but cut the tube capacity by one. This bullet in hard cast should be a great hunting round. Keith said that it was a great killer. If you look at most reloading manuels you will see that the 250 up loads in the magnum sections are marked Revolver only as most are too long to function properly when feeding. You can still use those that don't function well as single shot rounds.

Longfin,

What you percieve as the cartridge stop is correct. This can be cut back quite a way in any Marlin. I have gone nearly .100 in the 1894 without a problem. The amount this can be cut is related to timing of the action. When the carrier comes up the bolt is closing. The cartridge must be in front of the face of the bolt at the time the carrier is up all the way. The only way to fix it if you go too far is a new carrier.
