Gentlemen:

I am new to the forum and this will be my first post. I recently bought a Ruger Single Six. This one is an old model with the original lock work intact and in as new condition in the box. We are referring to it as a flat top even though it isn't quite like the Blackhawk flattops. It has a fixed sight which is dovetailed into the top strap. A call to Ruger revealed that it was manufactured in June of 1968.

Unfortunately, this revolver shoots about a foot high at 25 yards with .22 LR ammunition. I haven't tried the magnun cylinder yet.

Is this a common problem with the old model Single Sixes?

Steve,

I have a couple from the late fifties, they're excellent shooters with really great triggers; the ones I have DO NOT have magnum cylinders.

Yes, mine all shot high...

...with high-velocity CCI mini-mag hp's (quit using them) and Winchester X22LRPP- the hollow points are fun to shoot as they make a nice round hole in the target.

I took a file to the top of the rear sight (lowering the rear sight forces the front sight down), reblued, done.

You might find standard velocity ammo helps, but your problem is exacerbated by having to set up one set of sights for at least two different loads (LR and Mag.).

If you decide to lower the rear sight, go slow! Using mathematical proportions will show you that you only need to file the top of the rear sight about 1/10", if you're really shooting 12" high. If you're unfamiliar with this method, I think Brownell's web site has "instructions" for this in the section for selecting open front bead and semi-buckhorn sights for lever-action rifles.

I spent an entire afternoon to lower the rear sight on one revolver. Remember velocity will change with different ammo, ambient temperature, etc. Lots to think about- it comes off easy, but you can't put it back on....worse than a haircut.

Good luck,

Welcome to the board, cessna - Hope you will stay and join in the discussions.

You might also check with www.brownells.com for replacement adjustable rear sights for your Ruger. It will be a simple installation with the dovetail base slot. This will allow you to adjust the sights for both the standard .22LR and the .22 WMR. Save the original sight to keep the handgun original if you ever decide to part with it.
