Those of you who shoot Ruger single actions, which grip do you find more comfortable, the regular or vasquaro? I'm wondering about the Super Blackhawk Hunter .44 mag. or .45 colt.
Thanks, Rockerdog

I`ve had 2 super blk hawks and a vaquero. Both in 44 mag/spec. I think the grips are real close to being the same. You might be thinking of the Bisley? I do perfer the standard grip.

leadlum, thanks for the reply. Your right, I was thinking of the Bisley style grip.

I prefer (and own) the Bisley grips. I think the only standard Bisley hunter is the .44Mag, which was OK by me cause that was the one I wanted. If I remember correctly, they also made a special run of .41Mag in Bisley Hunter (for Davidsons?).

Try them both if you can, but if you want .45Colt you might be stuck with only 1 choice.

Bisley, but to be fair it greatly depends on your hand size, and technique.

You will find proponents of all of the Ruger grip shapes, 'standard,' Bisley, and Super Blackhawk, even the occasional fan of the aftermarket birds-head style.

Main thing is that it fits your hand well, and doesn't whack the knuckle on your middle finger (a sin that the Super Blackhawk grip frame is often guilty of).

I did finally learn to shoot a Super Blackhawk, but not without drawing blood on the squared-off triggerguard!

Generally speaking.... if you were to conduct a poll, the Bisley would probably win.

Bear in mind that Ruger factory stocks range from pretty good to downright terrible in terms of fit, and this can make a huge difference as well.

Also, the blued Blackhawks normally have an aluminum grip frame, and the lighter weight tends to exaggerate recoil and muzzle flip. So it's not just the shape.

My stock grips landed in the horrible category in terms of fit to the frame. I need to get some good after market wood grips to fix this problem, but I haven't managed to do that yet. It is on the short list though...

OK, here's my take. I retro fitted my OM Ruger SAs to the original XR3 grip frame and grips. The XR3-RED always felt bad in my hand. I felt as if I were not in control of the gun.
The SBH dragoon grip frame with the squared off trigger grard is the worst feeling and most painfull grip design I've ever shot.
Only held a Bisley, but it isn't comfortable to me holding it, so I'm sure it wouldn't be any better firing it.
Same comment on the birdshead grip.

Colt's original SAA grip design works best for me, and the XR3 grips is a copy of that. So that's what I use.

the best thing you can do is try them. I'm one of the weirdo's that likes the Bird-head grips on SA revolvers, they just seem to roll in my hand better, but thats me. go to a range and rent a couple guns with differnt grip styles or go with some people that have them and ask to try them.

It all depends, you should hold them both (shoot them both if you can) to see what you prefer. I like the regular grip, it fills the hand better. The hammer is different on the Bisley grip also, it lays back lower toward your gun hand.
