Here's the first buck of the season. My friend Ross hunts up near Childress Texas on the Pease River. That country has both Mule deer and Whitetail,
Ross arrowed this 151 1/4 Whitetail Saturday morning.
He makes the Pope & Young club as well as the Texas Big Game award for deer over 150.

That's nicer than what I saw tonight. An 8 pt. which wasn't bad at all for the hill country. He was chasing a doe; a few times she looked back at him as if his nose was cold...
Nothing came close enough to stick an arrow in, but the rut seems to be starting here.

We got poured on. Some areas reported a lot more than that (don't have exact figures) and lots of flooding. Saw where water has run across quite a few roads.
The deer don't seem to mind.....

It's my "assault rifle" for the ranch! Black plastic stock, how could it be anything else? Need to get a forward grip, and about a dozen accessories to hang off the forend, LOL

That looks like good BBQ'ing, Mike!
Yeah - that .35 Rem Marlin needs some dressing up if you intend to keep it a "black gun"!

My load was a Beartooth 210gr. bullet, over 3 - yes, three - grains of Bullseye. Fill the rest of the case full of dacron or similar. It pops about like a .22 pistol and is good for maybe 600 feet or so at the muzzle.
At about 20 yards, if you put one just under the right eye as it's quartering toward you... no tracking required
168 ft-pounds of energy, baby!!!! Same as the old British .38 "Manstopper" load.....

That was a big boy. How far was he.
Someone posted about using a 22 rimfire on hogs.
I don't think so!

That is a nice hog! Sounds like you got him with a "pop gun". I'll have to try a load like that.

About 20 yards, I guess. He had just cleared the brush to the north of the pop-up blind.
I don't think a .22 would have much more than dented his skull. Might have made him mad!!!!!

Well, as it turns out, someone had shot him with a .22, best guess. There was an ugly hole in one of the hams, and a few lead fragments in the ham and that end of the backstrap. No jacket material and no large bullet piece that I could find. Didn't smell too good either If I had realized what it was, would have left that ham in the field for the coyotes to enjoy....
Ended up tossing about 2/3 of that ham.
I brought home 90 or so pounds of meat in the cooler, and in daylight, would have had more. Butchering him in the dark, with a flashlight tucked under one arm, reminded me of the Jimmy Buffet refrain: "All messy, with knives a-slashin'..."
I took home the shoulders (about 10 lbs each), hams (about 13 lbs. each), backstraps, neck, belly, ribs, and tenderloins, of course. Left the shanks (meat below the knee/elbow joint) in the field, along with lots of scraps here and there attached to the spine. Didn't weight the neck pieces but there is more meat on the neck, usually, than both shoulders put together.
Here is one final pic of "Snouty" as we have now dubbed him, no doubt you can guess why. 48 qt. cooler, for scale.

Wow, that's a lot of pork! Congrats Mike! What would you figure a live weight; 300? 350? Or am I off?

I'm not sure to be honest. I have no idea how much meat you get off a pig, percentage wise.....
