That's why Chris will be in NH.
While a NJ bear hunt is needed due to the population explosion of black bears, the real reason for more bear encounters in NJ is truly due to man.
NJ is running out of room to build;
pretty soon there will be no woodlands short of the Pine Barrens.
The biggest issue with the bears is that man is building and encroaching on bear habitats that have existed for thousands of years. every year you see more and more bearencounters in urban areas, close to developments that border the woddlands. Why? Well for one, we encroach on the bear's habitat.. Then there is the confused bear that unknowingly enters the community, and lastly, the moronic citizen who feels he must feed them, 'because they look so cute'....
please.
I'm as deep as I could get in the woods of NH. I've seen track, scat, but never an actual bear. I take precautions, especially in spring, but year round as a rule while walking the dogs. Don't want the Mrs. or Daughter to run into a mom & her cubs at antyime with a steadfast lab that won't take no for an answer when it comes to defending her.

I saw a TV special that had some info on black bears in N.J. and it was pretty interesting. They claimed there were bears of 800 pounds wandering around there and that's about as large as a black bear gets anywhere. The pictures they showed of some of the bears did show some very good sized bears, but the 800 pound talk seems a bit far fetched to me

The last one that shot by rangers in NJ was about 745 pounds. He was a very big bruin, getting fat from garbage raids, surely not from foreaging like he should.
a 400 pound bear is about the norm average for the older ones.
