I'm thinking about using a Weaver pivot mount scope mount on my 444S.

I have a good fixed 4 power scope that I'd like to use. Every few years I stumble into a close-in shot where it's hard to get the deer in a fixed 4 power scope, so I'd like the option of just swivelling the scope out of the way and using the iron sights. (Have a "see-through" mount, but it's so darn high.)

My concern is whether the pivot mount will hold up to the recoil of a big bore?

Advice appreciated.

I have a pivot mount on my 35whelen (rem 7600) and so far havent had any problems with accuracy when I go from iron to scope. Granted a 45/70 has a little more recoil.

I have one on a pre-64 Winchester Mod. 70 in 375 H&H. I got the gun that way and figured it just couldn't work well but, shot it anyway. To my surprise the darn thing cut 3 touching with Winchester 300gr FMJ's at 100 yds. Stood up to the recoil just fine. Never changed that mount and don't think I will!!

If the pivot mounts will hold up to a 35 Whelen and a 375 H&H, they should do well on my 444 Marlin. Truthfully, I'll probably not even load to MAX as I'm a wee bit tender in the recoil department.

Were I hunt ,in Ontario we are faced with snow and rain during the deer and moose hunt.
The idea of using the scope and iron sites, go back when scopes were new and could fog up. Now a days unless you drop your rifle and break the scope you see as well through the scope as you are going to with iron sites.
I find snow disables a peep quicker than a few drops of water on a scope lens.
On my 45/70 guide gun I mounted a 2X 20 weaver on regular weaver base.The deer last year than ran through some heavy cover thought it was the worse como. that appeared that day. It was all over in a few seconds.
So pick a scope and mount that fits as close to the rifle bore as you can , and you will always be on target for that quick snap shot.
