I recorded this unusual howl the other night in Central Illinois. I wondered what you guys thought about what kind of animal it is. I have had people tell me coyote, fox, or wolf but it doesn't sound like a coyote to me.

Sounds like a Coy-dog..they do vary a bit in call, just s they vary a bit in looks.

Either that, or you got a Loup Garu problem (them Katrina refugees keep showing up everywhere).

Boy, I wish we could get our dogs to talk! I have lots of coyotes in this area. My Karelian Bear Dog who spends a lot of time in the woods is not a back porch or chained up dog.

She barks at the coyotes almost every night but when this thing goes off, 2 times so far, she either just stares at the woodline or howls.

Of course if I had a picture people would only label that a hoax. lol

I have been hearing a coyote in my area late at night lately. Several neighbors have pooh-poohed the idea and said I was wrong, even though 'yotes have been in the northern part of the county for several years. But, I actually saw the so-and-so this morning early on my way in to work. I guess the rest won't be convinced until either I kill it or their pets start disappearing...

I spent a lot of time in the southwest in remote areas, coyotes can make all kinds of wierd noises and this is not unlike coytes I've herard in the past. I voted coyote. I was real tempted to vote Bigfoot in hopes there would be one.

Coyotes are generally known to be shy of humans but a couple of my experiences show they are anything but shy. I was attacked by a pack of 7 in New Mexico, rather I should say my dog was, while I was out on horseback. It ended up me afoot holding the reins of my horse with the dog running around under her legs in an arroyo. The horse was kicking the crap out of them and I was beating them with a great big stick, like a ball bat. One jumped on the horses back. Don't you know there were fireworks when that happend. Funny thing about the horse though, she knew we were in a fight and didn't try and run off. We finally won the day but not without a lot of seriously damaged yotes. The dog was a pup and really couldn't defend herself. Had I not been there she would certainly have been dinner. That dog died of old age.

I've heard dogs make a lot of different howls. I've never heard a yote sound like that but I haven't heard that many yotes howl either.
My vote goes to someone's dog complaining of a late supper.

That was not a coyote or wolf it sounded more like a man trying to howl like a wolf through a homade call or somthing sounded like a human howling through a drain pipe or maybe bigfoot I have never heard a sasquatch but have heard coyotes and wolves and dogs even coydogs if you ever hear a wolf you will never forget it, I tell you what

I hate to pull trump after all the wise and thoughtfull discussion that has gone into identifying the sound on this post. However, I am expert in the recorded sound and know exactly what it is.

The noise on the tape is my mother-in-law.

Even though she and both I live in Texas, I know for a fact that her howl can carry to Illinois and points beyond.

Ever since she quit the roller derby things have been difficult around here. Pray for me........

sounded like a coyote to me. didn't sound like a wolf, but then, maybe that was the accent on your smaller, non-Alaskan wolves.

I voted yote.
